Boiler Demographics

Industries have predispositions for boiler size, primary fuel, and operating characteristics. Understanding the linkages among these factors, one can predict what kind of boilers will be found in a given sector or region and/or the anticipated change in that population.

Using base-line data from ABMA, it is estimated that over 80 percent of the boilers in use were purchased prior to 1978.

Limited information by industry is available on the vintage of the boilers purchased prior to 1978, which makes up the bulk of the existing installations. The largest number of new boiler purchases is in the Miscellaneous/Other Manufacturing industries, Chemicals and Food industries.

The vintages by capacity are relatively consistent among industries with most showing about 19 percent of boiler capacity purchased since 1978. Food (22%), Paper (21%) and Refining (20%) are slightly higher; only 7 percent of the boiler capacity in the Primary Metals industry was purchased since 1978.
