Overview

Distributed Generation (DG) equipment has been available for many years. It may have been known by names such as generators, back-up generators, or on-site power systems. Some DG technologies are not new (e.g., internal combustion engines, steam turbines and combustion turbines). On the other hand, due to the changes in the utility industry, several new technologies are being developed or advanced toward commercialization (e.g., fuel cells and microturbines).

The chart below provides information regarding commercially available DG equipment as well as those technologies still undergoing development. Some of the technologies are listed in both categories because they are currently commercially available but are also undergoing additional research and development.
