Plastics Processing: Transfer Molding

Along with compression molding, this process is typically used for thermosetting plastics. In transfer molding, a charge of thermoset is placed in a separate chamber, or pot. The charge is carefully pre-measured and preheated, usually by dielectric heaters. A plunger enters the pot and forces the resin through runners (channels cut in the mold) into individual cavities where it cures. After curing, the molded parts and connecting sprues are removed as one piece, separated, and trimmed.
