Plastics Processing: Reinforced Plastics / Composites

Reinforced plastics and composites (RPCs) are a combination of polymeric resins and reinforcing agents. Processors most commonly use glass or carbon fibers as reinforcing agents, but they have also been known to use quartz, boron, and ceramic or metal fibers. The use of these reinforced materials has gained popularity due to their high strength and low weight. Processors commonly produce them by chopping the fibers into short lengths and mixing them with resin or by using woven fiber mats, which are then impregnated or coated with liquid resin.

Common Applications: automobile body panels, military hardware, tools, sporting goods, aircraft parts
