The Primary Metals module contains a wide range of processes and materials. The common theme of the module is materials preparation, melting and solidification. No single concise set of data entry cells exists to accommodate all the material and process heating issues for the various ores, other raw materials, the resultant molten material and solidification to ingots, billets, and other shapes.

Users are encouraged to visit the DOE Best Practices website (www.oit.doe.gov/bestpractices/process_heat/) and gain access to the PHAST tool. It was jointly developed by Oak Ridge National Labs and IHEA (the Industrial Heating Equipment Association) and can be utilized to complete a heat balance for a particular process. PHAST will display a net and gross heat requirement, energy use per pound and the thermal efficiency for both the exiting and a modified condition (to evaluate the impact of installing a replacement process).
