General Profile Information - Markets Served: Metal Casting - Zinc

The U.S. is the world's largest consumer of zinc. Most zinc is used in the galvanizing steel process. Other uses include the automotive, construction, electrical and machinery industries. Zinc compounds include agricultural chemicals, paints, pharmaceuticals, and rubber. Another interesting application for zinc is to provide cathodic protection as a sacrificial anode for pipelines (including natural gas). Zinc compounds are also used in sunscreens, cold remedies, and dietary supplements.

Of the total zinc consumed, about 55% was used in galvanizing, 17% in zinc-base alloys, 13% in brass and bronze, and 15% in other uses. Zinc compounds and dust were used principally by the agriculture, chemical, paint and rubber industries.

Of zinc metal consumed, about 75% was used in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, mostly by steel companies.
