Aluminum
/ Copper / Zinc / Lead / Magnesium: Holders / Launders
After melting,
the aluminum is degassed and filtered. It is then generally tapped and gravity
fed from the furnace into a holding furnace. From the holding furnace, aluminum
is gravity fed again out to casting machines in insulated and heated troughs called
launders. Many holding furnaces and almost all launder systems are electrically
heated. However, one example of a gas-fired holding furnace is shown below.
This equipment
features a flat flame roof mounted burner. Flat flame burners produce a flame
pattern that eliminates flame impingement on the molten metal bath, minimizing
metal losses. The equipment is designed to fit in a compact footprint space yet
has the ability to recover greater metal temperature losses than an equivalent
electrically heated design.
