Codes and Standards

The National Energy Policy Act of 1992, mandated that states adopt energy codes at least as stringent as the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Standard 90.1. ASRAE is a major provider of HVAC&R standards that cover methods of testing and minimum performance or acceptance performance criteria. ASHRAE is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and follows ANSI’s requirements for due process and standards development. Test procedures referenced by ASHRAE may originate from the U.S. government such as the U.S. Department of Energy, ANSI, CSA International, or Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL).

Major standards include:

  • ASHRAE Standard 62.1 – 2007: Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings
  • ASHRAE Standard 90.1 – 2004: Energy Standards for Buildings, Except Low-Rise Residential Buildings
  • U.S. Department of Energy 10 CFR Parts 434 and 435 – Energy Code for New Federal Commercial and Multi-Family High Rise Residential Buildings
