Demographics: Boiler Sales

Sales of all boilers declined over the last 40 years.

Sales of the smaller firetube boilers declined steadily from 3,000 per year in 1964 to only 500 per year in 2003, although these boiler types accounted for the bulk of boiler unit sales during this period.

Similarly, sales of smaller watertube boilers declined at about the same pace from 1,000 to 100 units per year with a brief boom from 1997 to 2002, peaking at about 700-800 units in 2000. Sales of larger watertube boilers dropped sharply from a high of 250+ per year in 1974 to scarcely more than 100 in 1976 following the 1974 energy crisis and economic recession. Since then, sales have dropped further to only dozens per year, mostly for natural gas and waste heat recovery boilers.

Today, over 81% of boilers in use were purchased prior to 1978.
